Lastpass extension crashes in Chrome

Post by kydar » Tue Apr 24, 2018 6:32 pm

I run Chrome inside Sandboxie (paid version) and everything usually runs fine. Lately though the Lastpass extension crashes occasionally and cannot be reloaded. It will be running fine, when all of a sudden it becomes disabled, and looking at it on the extension manager page shows that it "may have been corrupted." At that point, if I uninstall it (i.e., the lastpass extension) and attempt to reinstall it, I get a "could not unzip extension" error in Chrome. The only solution is to delete the entire sandbox and create a new one. This has happened 3-4 times in the past couple months.

None of this happens when I run Chrome outside the sandbox, so Sandboxie would seem to be the culprit somehow. Would appreciate any help or feedback.

Win 7 ultimate
Chrome 65.0.3325.181
Sandboxie 5.25.1 (same happened in 5.24, thought the beta might fix it)
Lastpass 4.9.1

Hello kydar,
The only solution is to delete the entire sandbox and create a new one
Do you mean that if you delete the contents of your Sandbox, the issue persists after relaunching Chrome?
At that point, if I uninstall it ...
If the application is installed on the host, then you would need to re-install it outside Sandboxie, then delete the contents of your Sandbox and re-try.

When it crashes, what happens exactly? Are there any error messages?
Are you using any other extensions as well?
Can you repro the crash by performing any specific actions?
Is the LastPass template enabled ? (Right-Click on your Sandbox --> Sandbox settings ---> Applications --->Security/Privacy --> LastPass

What is your OS architecture? x64? x86?

Also, please post your Sandboxie configuration file:
Configure--> Edit configuration
Copy-paste the output here
Highlight the output you just pasted and click on the "</>" button for format it.

Regards,
Barb.-

It will recur, yes, but not immediately. As I mentioned, it has happened about 3-4 times in the past month.

I see. I was reinstalling the browser extension in Chrome within the sandbox. I guess you're saying that's a no-no.
When it crashes, what happens exactly? Are there any error messages?
The extension icon disappears, and if I then look in Chrome's More tools/extensions area, I see the extension listed as "may be corrupted" or something of that nature.
Are you using any other extensions as well?
Oh yes I use many extensions in Chrome. Lastpass is the only one that has this problem though.
Can you repro the crash by performing any specific actions?
Not that I've been able to determine as of yet.
Is the LastPass template enabled ? (Right-Click on your Sandbox --> Sandbox settings ---> Applications --->Security/Privacy --> LastPass
There are two hyphens between the brackets. I'm not sure if that means it is enabled or not

x64

Hello kydar,

So far, I have not been able to reproduce the issue. I am going to leave Chrome + LastPass + Sbie running for a while and will update this thread if anything comes up.

Please let me know the results after having re-installed the application outside Sandboxie and testing in a new Sandbox with default settings.
The two hyphens in the LastPass template indicate it is enabled globally (which is what we want, so all good there).

What are the other extensions installed? Try removing them one at a time to see if the behavior changes.

I also see you have an AV running, make sure Sandboxie is whitelisted and also test disabling/removing the AV to see if the behavior changes.

Regards,
Barb.-

Thanks. If it happens again, I'll try and gather more diagnostic info.

I had this same problem occur as well. Left clicking on the last pass icon did not result in the gui popping up. I uninstalled lasspass and installed it again, and it resulted in the unziping error; cleaning the sandbox fixed this issue.

This problem continues even through the latest Sandboxie update (5.26, 64-bit). It's occurring more and more frequently, in fact. It's getting really annoying. If this continues, I might have to switch to another solution like Virtualbox or VMWare.

All,

Please provide the required information so that we can test and try to reproduce the issue:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19746

Include as well the results of trying what was already mentioned in this thread, test in a new Sandbox with default settings, plus your Sandboxie configuration file (viewtopic.php?p=133262#p133262)

The problem is, it's not readily reproducible. It only happens around once a week, and there are no antecedent factors that I've been able to identify.

I'm having the same problem.
lastpass crashes, delete lastpass, delete sandbox, reinstall lastpass in non-sandboxied browser, start in sandbox.
but i also have the issue that concerns me more, when i type in my password into last pass, it brings up 2 factor authentication page, and when i put in the 6 digit number, lastpass goes black, and asks for my password again. this keeps happening, until i delete lastpass, and delete sandboxie, start chrome in non sandbox, add extension lastpass back, restart in sandbox, then it works, so either lastpass crashes, and uninstalls itself, of i have to do it. my having to repeatly type my password also concerns me, even though i have 2 factor authentication.

Hello jodygok@mail.com,

We are still unable to repro the issue. Please provide all of the info I requested before (including repro steps if possible) and I will try to recreate the issue again.

I (OP) have noticed that it hasn't happened to me again in about 2 months. Idk if a recent update to Chrome, Lastpass, and/or Sandboxie may have fixed the problem. I wish there were some way to repeatedly reproduce it so that Barb et al could get to the bottom of it. For a while I was thinking that opening a second instance of Chrome outside of the sandbox at the same time the sandboxed copy was running would reproduce it. My thinking was that since Lastpass is a cloud-based app, maybe having two instances of it (one inside the sandbox, one outside) trying to communicate with the server at the same time might cause a problem. Unfortunately, I did some tests and it did not pan out. That is, it sometimes reproduced the problem, sometimes not.

I'm having the exact same issue. Google Chrome, Windows 10, Surface Pro 4. Just started happening a few days ago. Took me a few days to narrow it down. I have replicated this several times.
Chrome: Version 65.0.3325.162 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Finally! Someone is able to replicate the problem. Now maybe we will get to the bottom of it. Can you tell us anecdotally how you did it?
