Firefox Sandboxed and Keepass with Kee extension

Post by Red.Dwarf » Wed Jan 03, 2018 7:01 pm

I have been having trouble with Firefox 52.* ESR Keepass and Kee (previously known as keefox) extension which allows integration of Keepass with Firefox.

It used to work fine but recently Kee and Keepass are constantly prompting for access when Firefox is running sandboxed. I do not run Keepass sandboxed BTW and previously that was not a problem. With Firefox not sandboxed I was asked once for the access but not again as it should remember it. That is not happening with Firefox & Kee when they are running sandboxed. It's driving me crazy constantly ie every half an hour or whenever my pc returns from standby, asking me to re-authorize the connection.

I do run multiple sandboxed Firefoxes and both are prompting for authorization at very regular intervals.

I am guessing that something has been changed with sandboxie which is causing these problems. The question is how do I make it so that this does not happen and it remembers the authorization?

I have tried changing the Resource Access->File Access->direct Access settings and I have added the kee extension folder in firefox profile folder. That has made no difference.

How do I solve this?

Um, doesn't Firefox 52.* ESR require KeeFox.
Version 1.7.2 Released Sept. 3, 2017 843.9 KiB Works with Firefox 32.0 - 56.*, Thunderbird 32.0 - 56.*

Welcome to Kee 2.0
The new name for KeeFox
Version 2.0 brings exciting new features and some enforced changes in order to support Firefox 57 and higher.

This add-on requires a newer version of Firefox (at least version 56.0). You are using Firefox 52.0.

---- Mini Update---
I am uninstalling this extension as it is keeping me from using Firefox (both ESR and Quantum) outside Sandboxie. It bombards me with prompts regarding Authorization every time I type something. I don't think this is a Sandboxie issue.

Hello Red.Dwarf

I am trying to find the download links for the addons you mentioned but they all seem to require the latest version of Firefox. I found Keefox 1.70 (which installed Keepass version 2.35), however I couldn't find a Kee version that is supported by FF 52. Even with version 1.70, the login (Hotmail) I created was scrambled and unusable (outside Sandboxie). Can you please clarify which versions are you using and where to get them from?

Did you have to make any changes to Firefox in order for the addons to work in the past?
Please post the results or running Resource Access Monitor:
https://www.sandboxie.com/ResourceAccessMonitor

If you want to try running it Sandboxed, here's a related thread:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=22136
I am guessing that something has been changed with sandboxie which is causing these problems
Which version of Sandboxie are you using? Does it work fine on previous versions?
Does the issue follow you to a new Sandbox with default settings?

Regards,
Barb.-

Sorry about the confusion. Yes I am using Keefox, I looked at the Firefox Kee/Keefox extension page and used the name which is showed there.

I am using Keefox 1.7.2, Keepass 2.36 and Sandboxie 5.22 with Firefox 52.5.3 ESR updated from previous 52.x install outside sandboxes. Sandboxes were not deleted. This was downloaded from the other versions on the mozilla extension page.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /versions/

This has been an issue for a while but the repeated authorisation has increased. It now requires authorisation about every half an hour when keepass is loaded. It requests authorisation when my PC returns from standby, it requests authorisation continually and is a real nuisance. Outside the sandbox it doesn't ask for authorisation if/when I run Firefox outside a sandbox, rarely and only as a trial or to upgrade.

Sandboxie resource access log, there are 2 logs, which I started prior to going into standby and then copied the logs.
2======================================= marks the 2nd log. I have just opened Keepass and there is an authorisation dialogue showing on this Sandboxed Firefox browser yet again.

I have just run a none sandboxed Firefox with a test profile which has keefox installed. NO authorisation requests! I have closed Keepass and re-run Keepass and I get an authorisation request from my other Sandboxed Firefox but not the none sandboxed Firefox or this sandboxed Firefox.

I have closed the none sandboxed Firefox and re-run it and no authorisations are requested. It is only sandboxed Firefoxes which have the problem. It seems to alternate between the two sandboxed Firefoxes.

Hello Red.Dwarf,

I installed Keefox 1.7.2, plus I upgraded KeePass to match your version -2.36- but the only one available was 2.37 (I was on 2.35 prior to that)...Found 2.36 on their website but it redirects to 2.37, so that's what I am using at the moment.
I am running Sandboxie latest beta 5.23.3 + FF ESR v52.5.3 (64bits) + Win 7 x64

I was receiving annoying amounts of authorization messages when I was using 2.35 (outside Sandboxie), but I have only received one since upgrading to 2.37 and rebooting the VM. See if updating to the latest version helps. You will probably have to delete your sandbox contents as well.

Regards,
Barb.-

I am still having problems with this Firefox extension and Sandboxed Firefox. I have created a new profile and only installed Keefox and it does not work. I mostly, but not 100%, do not get any authorisation requests between keefox and keepass. Very rarely it will but it still fails to work afterwards. It has on one occasion detected that keepass is running and indicated that there are logins for the webpage. However that is very rare now. I thought that it might be an extension conflict but with no other extensions installed it still will not work.

I have been having problems with this on and off for a long time but now it is totally unusable.

I have tried disabling my firewall but it does not make much difference.

I have tested outside a sandbox and it runs without problems.

Hello Red.Dwarf,

Let's start over, as it has been a while since you posted this. Please provide all of the required info so that I can set up the test environment (repro steps are a must):
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19746

Plus, a copy of your Sandbox configuration file
Configure --> Edit configuration
Copy/paste the contents , highlight them and click on the "</>" to format them.

I have created several new sandboxes today after experiencing problems with Firefox and Keepass/keefox. It occasionally will work but more often than not it will not. I started installing FireFox extensions and found out that keefox would not work. I thought it might be an extension conflict so created a new sandbox and only installed keefox. Still no luck.

Sandboxie 5.26 x64
Windows 7 x64 SP1
Firefox 52.9.0 ESR x64
Keefox 1.7.2
Keepass 2.37 x64
Microsoft Security Essentials but it is not really used and no active scanning. I mainly use a file hash with virustotal.
Outpost Firewall Pro 9.3 I have disabled this but it made no difference.
Windows 7 x64 SP1
Intel Core i7-3770K stock speed
Asus P8Z77-V Premium with 2x8GB Crucial + 2x4GB 1600MHz Samsung Green memory
5 Hard drives 250,250,500,500,1000 & Asus/Intel SSD Caching of system drive

Hi Red.Dwarf,

What are the exact repro steps to see the problem?
What are the errors that you are getting?
And, to clarify are the addons installed outside or inside the Sandbox?
How about the browser?

Also, since you did mention this does not have 100% rate, are you sure it does not happen outside Sandboxie as well?

Last, but not least, try giving access the Firefox profile to see if that makes any difference:
Right-click on your Sandbox --> Sandbox settings --> Applications -->Web browser --> Firefox
Check "Allow direct access to entire Firefox profile"
Re -test
(You can disable this option after having tested).

Barb.-

Hi Barb,

I have tried a few (5) site logins running outside the sandbox and those all completed successfully.

Setting up a new sandbox and profile which is not present outside the sandbox just does not work. The keefox button shows launch Keepass to enable keefox tooltip when the mouse is hovered above it when I am on a login for a site. That is with keepass open and running. Also Keepass and the sandboxed FF did not prompt for authorisation which it should because only the none sandboxed FF (connected) is shown in Keepass KeepassRPC (keefox) options. [Edit] this time it did prompt for authorisation which is something but after that no logins are recognised. It still says launch Keepass.... This is what I have been experiencing, sometimes it partly works but at other times it does not. Very rarely it has recognised Keepass and allowed a login but usually it will not.

I have had a combination. I was using a FF profile which was present outside the sandbox. But it just seems to cause problems. Therefore I have just been setting up a FF profile in a sandbox and installed extensions into the sandbox but Keepass always runs outside the sandbox. FF is installed outside the sandbox only. I never do any updates inside the sandbox unless things throw a hissy fit such as Thunderbird sometimes. I will run the browser/email outside the sandbox and perform an update before running inside the sandbox. Thunderbird sometimes does not like that and I need to install the latest TB into the sandbox to recover.
The profile does not exist outside the sandbox so this will not work because there is nothing outside.

Hello Red.Dwarf,

This is what I tested:
Win 7 x64 + Sbie 5.26
FF ESR 52.9 x 64 --> Installed outside Sbie
Keepass 2.39.1 (could not find 2.37) --> Installed / running outside Sbie and created a new database with a password
In Sbie, launched FF and installed Keefox 1.7.2 ...it required KeePassRPC plugin
I installed KeePass plugin v 1.8 outside sbie
Relaunched keepass and then FF ESR in the sbox
Got prompted with authorization and code
Keefox complained that it is outdated , I selected to hide the message
I added hotmail to the logins
It doesn't do anything really other than complain that my email is incorrect (even tho the app adds the correct email to the login page).
Not sure what else to test since you did not provide repro steps.
If I use "copy username / password" it works. But it does not seem that homtail likes this.
I also tested running KeePass inside sandboxie, and the behavior is the same.
I relaunched FF ESR several times, and did not get any further authorization requests.

This is an old plugin, with an old addon, not sure it will work at all. But if you provide exact repro steps, plus include the expected behavior, I will test it. Otherwise, I would suggest you update to the latest versions and re-test.

Regards,
Barb.-
